How can governments modernize their citizen identification systems?
Modern citizen identification systems go far beyond simply printing a photo ID. Today, a secure national identity card, passport, or residence permit must integrate multiple layers of protection: cryptographic chips that store the holder’s biometric data, inks and holograms that prevent counterfeiting, optically readable zones (MRZs) compatible with international standards such as those of ICAO, and personalization software that controls every element of the document from data capture to delivery. Governments that modernize these systems drastically reduce document forgery, facilitate automated verification at borders and in public services, and lay the foundation for the digital identity of their citizens.
What elements should a safe driving license have and how is it issued?
A modern driver’s license is much more than just a piece of plastic with the driver’s information. Its secure issuance involves: biometric capture of the holder (fingerprint, photo, signature), cross-checking of data against traffic records and national identity databases, personalization of the document with physical security features (chip, hologram, microprinting), and printing on certified equipment that guarantees the quality and durability of the material. The process can be managed centrally for an entire territorial entity or decentralized at citizen service points. The current trend is to complement the physical license with a digital version on the driver’s smartphone, under the international standard ISO 18013-5 (mDL), which allows it to be presented at traffic stops without the need for the physical card.
What security technology do physical ID cards use, and why does it matter?
Modern physical ID cards incorporate multiple security technologies that operate in layers: visible elements (photograph, personal data, holograms, UV inks), machine-readable elements (barcode, magnetic stripe, MRZ zone), and electronic elements (contactless chip or dual interface with encrypted biometric data). This combination makes counterfeiting difficult, allows for rapid verification using automated readers, and enables integration with digital authentication systems. It is applied to government ID cards, corporate credentials, university IDs, access cards, and membership cards. The choice of which technologies to include depends on the required security level, the issuance volume, and the verification systems available at the points of use.
What is a digital credential and how does it replace a physical ID?
A digital credential is the secure representation of an identity document on a mobile device. To be equivalent to—or superior to—its physical version, it must meet three conditions: be cryptographically linked to the holder’s verified identity (it cannot be transferred or falsified), adhere to international interoperability standards (such as W3C Verifiable Credentials or ISO 18013-5), and have secure presentation mechanisms at checkpoints, whether through dynamic QR codes, NFC, or biometrics. Unlike a physical card, a digital credential can be instantly revoked if lost, updated without physical reissuance, and allows the holder to control what data is shared with each presentation (selective privacy). It is especially useful for educational institutions, companies with large workforces, government entities, and any organization that wants to eliminate the cost and friction of managing physical documents.
