In Latin America, means of payment are undergoing an accelerated evolution thanks to digitalization and technological innovation. This year, trends such as the hyper-personalization of services, integrated financial ecosystems and the phygital experience have gained prominence. Looking ahead to 2025, these dynamics will continue to transform, setting the course for an increasingly innovative and connected region.

For example, Colombia implemented Bre-BBanco de la República’s new platform designed to facilitate fast and secure transactions, marking a step forward in the modernization of payment systems. Meanwhile, in Brazil, Pix continues to consolidate its position as the preferred means of payment thanks to its agility and accessibility, transforming the way Brazilians make everyday transfers and payments.

According to Agência Brasil, the official news service of that country, Pix is currently used by 76.4% of Brazilians, consolidating its position as the most frequent payment method for 46% of those surveyed. This represents a significant growth compared to 2021, when only 46% had adopted the tool and only 17% used it regularly.

Latin America is moving towards a more digital, inclusive and efficient payments ecosystem, driven by innovative solutions that are changing financial dynamics in the region.

We present three trends that will define payment methods in 2025, ideal for driving innovation, transforming the customer experience and strengthening financial institutions.

Digitization and cash reduction

Digitalization is transforming consumption habits and payment methods in the region. Digital wallets, instant transfers, and virtual cards have become key tools for replacing the use of cash. This shift not only increases convenience but also strengthens the security and traceability of transactions. Furthermore, it promotes financial inclusion by enabling more people to access banking services through digital technologies, thereby reducing reliance on cash.

According to the tenth Payment Trends Report, developed by Minsait Payments , more than 50% of the banked adult population with internet access (ABI) has reduced or stopped using cash as a means of payment.

Digital payment methods, including digital bank cardsare key to driving financial inclusion. These tools enable more people to participate in the digital economy through secure transactions from their mobile devices or computers.

Advances with artificial intelligence in payments

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the payments industry, improving both security and user experience. Its implementation makes it possible to identify and prevent fraudulent activities by analyzing behavioral patterns in real time. It also facilitates processes such as user authentication, transaction automation and personalization of services according to customer preferences. At the same time, tools such as virtual assistants and AI-powered chatbots are transforming the interaction between consumers and payment services, offering fast and effective solutions.

The increase in identity theft has led to the adoption of key processes such as digital onboarding, biometric biometric verification and authentication in minutes. These measures, designed to ensure safety and improve the customer experience, are implemented under strict international standards that reinforce trust in every interaction.

Growth of mobile and contactless payments

Mobile and contactless payments are rapidly gaining ground in the financial ecosystem. Technologies like NFC and QR codes offer users a fast and secure way to make transactions, eliminating the need for cash or physical contact. This change is especially relevant in a context of greater health awareness and a preference for speed at points of sale.

At the same time, mobile payments are driving digital inclusion, enabling small merchants and consumers to access modern and efficient payment systems, facilitating a more connected and dynamic ecosystem.

In addition, it is essential to guarantee the security of transactions, where tokenization tokenization It has gained relevance by converting sensitive data, such as numbers, into tokens. This process prevents information theft and strengthens protection, making transactions more secure.

Interoperability in means of payment by 2025

Interoperability in payment methods is essential to create a more inclusive and efficient financial ecosystem. By connecting different platforms, banks and services, it allows users to transact without restrictions between networks or providers. This simplifies access to financial services, fosters competition and promotes a more agile and transparent experience. Interoperability not only improves usability, but also drives the development of innovative solutions in the financial sector.

Another outstanding example is Ualá in Argentina, a tool launched as part of the Transferencias 3.0 program of the Central Bank of Argentina (BCRA). This program implemented full interoperability in 2021, allowing all merchants that accept payments with QR codes to receive transactions from any digital wallet, whether from traditional banks or fintechs, according to El Cronista.

These four payment trends for 2025 reinforce the industry’s focus on the digitization of financial services, prioritizing the adoption of integrated technologies and channels to deliver more agile, convenient, seamless and secure transaction experiences.
